Recap

Stanley Group Matamata Swifts have held high flying Cambridge to a draw in the final Federation League Division 1 match at the Domain this season.

A tight, competitive first half offered up little in the way of goal scoring opportunities but the game opened up after the break.

The visitors took the lead when their top scorer, Jack Taylor, finished neatly after being superbly played through.

The goal was doubly disappointing as the Swifts should have been ahead not long before. Cambridge’s keeper made a hash of a cross and carried the ball over the line, but his quick thinking to push the ball out, along with unsighted officials, meant the visitors dodged a bullet.

Thankfully it didn’t take Matamata long to get on level terms after Bjorn Vossen rammed home a penalty following a push in the box.

Cambridge finished the stronger after both Vossen and Sam Masterson were forced off injured, meaning Matamata opened up a bit more than they would have liked.

But the Swifts held on and now must reset themselves for their final match of the season, a Federation Challenge Shield challenge at Cambridge next Saturday.
