More than 200 young players, including six from Matamata, gathered in Hamilton on January 18 for the Ricki Herbert Football Academy’s annual national camp.

Including a strong contingent from the South Island, male and female players travelled from around the North Island to attend the four-day event at the grounds of St Paul’s Collegiate, Hamilton.

Academy founder, Ricki Herbert, was delighted with the strong support for the camp which gives players and coaches a great opportunity to work on development, on and off the pitch.

Well done to all the Matamata boys who took part. Three players caught up with Herbert, the ex-All Whites and Wellington Phoenix coach, after the camp (pictured, from left: Theo Barlow, Leo Williams and Ryley Bruce). Jack Wilson, Zeb Mataitoga and Liam Costello-McVeigh also attended.

In 2021, the Ricki Herbert Football Academy will begin its third season partnering with Matamata Swifts to run a local, year-round player development programme. Local footballers who join this programme will have the opportunity to join future national camps and also be part of tour groups organised by the academy.
