It was a trip to a waterlogged Waikato University for the Swifts Waikato A side. They will be looking to go far in the cup this year as they met a team 2 divisions below them to open their campaign. However little can be read into these inter-division matches as quality teams are scattered throughout all the levels, as can be told by the fact that just one match in the opening round was settled by more than 2 goals.

It was to be no different in this match. An early goal to Ronan Costello and a second ball put in to the back of the net before being disallowed may have given the Swifts thoughts of a blow-out. However with 10 minutes to go the Swifts were holding on to the narrowest of 2-1 advantages, Jamie Cox having scored his 7th for the season.

A string of fine saves had kept the Unicol side in the match, and his team were to take advantage with just 8 minutes remaining, levelling the scores at 2-2. With a result being required, the match headed to extra time. Cox once again gave the Swifts the lead, and it was one they did not relinquish on this occasion, going home with a 3-2 victory and a place in the next round.
