One bonus of the recent burst of horrendous weather is that Matamata Swifts has been able to keep their junior soccer registration period open for longer.

The club’s junior grading day will now take place on Sunday March 19, after being postponed from March 12. This means that players who still wish to play soccer in 2017 have a bit more time to sign up, which is valuable at a time of year when summer sports are in full swing.

Players can sign up online here or at junior grading on Sunday.

“The thought of registering for, let alone playing, a winter sport is probably a long way from many people’s minds,” said the Swifts’ Junior Co-ordinator, Ronan Costello. “Positively, our registration numbers are ahead of where they were at the same time last year, but we still have space for more players.”

This is especially true for the club’s girls only teams. “We hope to establish a couple of girls only sides in 2017. At the moment we’re only a couple of players short of being able to commit to girls only teams in both the under-13 and under-8 age groups,” said Costello.

“The under-13 team is a great option for girls at Intermediate who are looking to play soccer at the AIMS Games in 2017, while the under-8 team is ideal for girls who took part in our Mini-Kickers programme last season and want to take the next step.”

Swifts junior grading for players aged 8 to 14 must take place during March as the club has to have its teams entered by early-April. “It’s a bit of a squeeze at this time of year, but hopefully all the recent rain has reminded people that winter sports aren’t too far away,” grinned Costello.

The club will continue to take registrations for their Mini-Kickers programme, for players aged 4 to 7, up until the start of the season.
