Saturday’s double header at the Domain saw the club record a win and a loss. The Stanley Joinery Matamata Swifts were defeated 3-0 by Tauranga Old Blues in Federation League Division 1. A relatively even contest was betrayed by some sleepy Swifts play at critical moments. Click here for the match report and photos.

It was brighter news in the early game, however, as the Swifts Reserves turned a 2-1 half time lead into a 3-1 victory over previously unbeaten Melville United. Marcelo Marquez, Matt Monteith and Ronan Costello got the goals. Click here for the match report and photos.

All our junior teams were also in action for the first time on Saturday. Click here to find out how they got on.

On Sunday the Swifts Ladies dropped their first points of the season after being held to a 2-2 draw at Te Awamutu. Both sides scored twice each during the first half, with Krystal Morrison bagging a brace for Matamata. The relatively even contest continued through the second half, but neither side could find a winner and they had to settle for a share of the points. Kate Smistra and Morrison were standout performers for the Ladies.

The Swifts Under-17s played their first match of the season in Rotorua against Geyser Football. The lads took a 1-0 lead through a Logan Raynel free kick before the hosts drew level soon after from the penalty spot. With the scores level at 1-1 at the break it was seemingly anyone’s game, but Geyser, made up of players from Rotorua United and Ngongotaha, finished the stronger and ran out to a 4-1 victory. Dillon Sankey performed well in goal for Matamata and took the player of the day honours.
