Matamata Swifts AFC is currently promoting registration for the 2018 junior football season. Players can sign up at one of the club’s two registration sessions, set for 6pm on Thursday March 1 and 12.30pm to 2pm on Saturday March 3 at the Matamata Domain clubrooms, or by filling out the simple online form: Players should click here for more.

The Swifts’ Junior Co-ordinator, Ronan Costello, said the club is looking forward to another healthy year of football in our community. “We field junior teams from age 8 year and older in the Waikato junior competition. The season begins on May 5 and runs throughout terms 2 and 3. Prior to that we have junior grading set for Sunday March 11.

“Our Mini-Kickers programme for children aged 4 to 7 is based at the Matamata Domain and begins on Saturday April 7 this year, which is a little earlier than usual.

“It probably seems too early to be thinking about playing a winter sport now, but with things like grading and team selection needing to be done in March, due to team entry deadlines, Easter and the April school holidays, players need to sign up now,” said Costello.

“We’ve got a lot to offer young sports people this season. Our subs have been kept at the same levels as the last couple of seasons for our junior teams and mini-kickers programme, although we’ve significantly reduced subs for 8th grade players to help with the transition from Mini-Kickers to playing in a travelling team.”

Girls’ football has extra focus in the Waikato during 2018, with a number of girls’ only leagues on offer. “This means we can offer girls only teams at several age groups. This has been proven in other parts of the country to increase enjoyment and involvement of girls in football,” explains Costello. “It’s a good, fun way for girls who want to give football a go but previously may not have fancied playing in mixed teams.”

“All players should register on-line, or they can sign-up at one of our registration evenings.”
